Communiqué #034
TO MY PARTNERS in MINISTRY
to the PEOPLE of HAITI
December 8, 2006
In late October, I traveled to Michigan with a Haitian baby who required surgery. I was thrilled that my brother would be the doctor to perform her necessary surgery! The baby was a good little traveler, even though she was running a fever and had an infection in both ears. Upon arriving in Grand Rapids, it was not long before she settled in with her host family and was scheduled for her operation. The operation went well and she is now receiving follow up treatment. She should be able to return to her mother in Haiti within the next month or so.
I thank God for Healing the Children, based in Michigan and Ohio, who over the past several years has made it possible to bring at least five children from the Les Cayes area to the states where they received medical treatment that was not available to them in Haiti. The programs that Healing the Children has in place offers a seriously ill child free medical care, donated by generous doctors, hospitals, and labs. Donors cover the cost of airfare. The child is placed in a loving home, where the family welcomes the child as one of their own. What a blessing this is!
There is also a story behind this story. Throughout the different cases that I have helped with, I have gotten acquainted with the Executive Director of Healing the Children. She relayed to me that for the past two years, her 9 year old granddaughter has asked her family to give her no presents for her birthday. Instead, she wanted to have them give money to Healing the Children to bring a child from another country for medical treatment. This year, the little girl that I brought from Haiti was “her child!” How awesome is that! A child helping children!!! Isn’t it exciting to watch how God works everything out?
Now, my newest challenge is finding help for adults who need medical care. There seems to be no programs in place for obtaining life-saving, free care for an adult in desperate need. I currently have two cases for which I am seeking help. The most recent case came to my attention only this week. It is a young man who will most certainly die if he remains in Haiti. Please pray that God will open the doors for treatment for him. At his bedside, we prayed with him and his family for a miracle. We know that our God is a God of miracles! This time too we will watch as God works out His plan for this young man!
